Kentucky Bluegrass seed is the proven & trusted variety for Manitoba climate, but the soil in which the seed grows in can differ amongst sod farms. The two varieties of soil available on the Manitoba market are mineral & peat. Mineral sod is clay based soil, and peat sod is peat moss based soil.
Mineral soil is known for its durability, and it can withstand less maintenance & more foot traffic. About 98% of lawns in Manitoba are mineral soil based.
Lach Sod Farms began its roots in 1955 when recent immigrants, Harry and Alice Lach, started cutting and delivering sod by hand. As more mechanization was adopted, the family business grew successfully.
In 1986, the Lachs sold their business to the Wohlers family. Bo Wohlers continued to expand the sod farm. Sod was marketed to homeowners, commercial landscapers, and garden centres.
In 2014, Bo Wohlers sold Lach Sod Farms to the Tollenaar family, who were excited to carry on a 60 year tradition of growing premium sod. Their focus continues to be to provide quality mineral sod to the Winnipeg and greater Manitoba marketplace.
